Georgia Tech’s North Avenue Complex recognized as world’s largest LEED EB O&M Certified university housing complex.

Their North Avenue Complex, which includes the residence hall and dining hall as well as a meeting space and full gym, received an LEED Gold certification for existing buildings: operation and maintenance (EB O&M). For those unfamiliar with the designation, LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The LEED ratings are developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) to provide a framework for sustainable building design, construction, operation and maintenance. 

Georgia Tech has a long history of conservation dating back to 1992 and the creation of their sustainability center, ISTD. The sustainability and stewardship program was eventually written into the institutes’ mission and strategic plan. As of June 2011, the university had at least 24 structures that were LEED registered and designed or renovated to meet or exceed LEED Silver standards, 5 buildings which are LEED certified, and over 60 campus buildings that have been retrofitted to be more sustainable, save water, and reduce energy consumption.

 
The drought that hit the Southeast five years ago heightened sustainability awareness at the university. As an example of how the simplest change can have a lasting impact, the campus dining halls discontinued the use of dining trays and had guests carry their dishes to their tables instead. This saved 3,000 gallons of water each day in two dining halls. Also, "low flow" fixture use was expanded and water conservation was highlighted in new buildings, which coincided with LEED registration.

Though these LEED initiatives have distinct marketing advantages, environmental responsibility is what motivates the students, staff and administration in the Georgia Tech community. For several years the university has received excellent grades and been considered a "Campus Sustainability Leader" by the Sustainable Endowments Institute. Georgia Tech is committed to improving the campus-wide initiative wherever possible with everything from sustainability research in academics, participating in the Solar Decathlon, recycling centers and a continuing dedication to building improvements.
